Tips when a fire occurs
When a fire occurs, remaining calm is the main key. Panic will only make things worse and hinder the evacuation process. Here are some tips you can follow:
- Sound the Alarm and Tell Others
Immediately sound the fire alarm if there is one. Notify others around you about the fire by shouting or using a bell. Evacuate yourself and others immediately to a safe place.
- Use the Emergency Staircase
If you are in a multi-storey building, use the emergency stairs for evacuation. Avoid using the lift, because the lift can become trapped in the event of a fire.
If possible, close the door to the burning room to prevent the fire from spreading.
If you are trained and able, use a fire extinguisher to put out small fires. Make sure you use the correct fire extinguisher for the type of fire occurring.
- Crawl and Get Some Fresh Air
If the smoke is heavy, get on all fours and get fresh air near the floor. Cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth to avoid inhaling smoke.
Immediately call the fire department on 113. Provide clear information about the location of the fire and the situation.
